Ku Klux Klan: Terrorism in the United States of America
The infamous terrorist group, The Ku Klux Klan, or better known as simply, The KKK, was founded in 1865 and still exists today. There were and are three different Klans that were created. The first existed from 1865 to the 1870s with around 550,000 members. This Klan was founded by six Confederate Army veterans in Pulaski, Tennessee. The second Klan was founded in Atlanta, Georgia from 1915 to 1944 with 3,000,000 to 6,000,000 members, they had the most members of the three Klans. The third Klan started in 1946 and is still around today with around 5,000 to 8,000 members. The KKK are mainly located in the south, but usually don’t stay in one place for fear of being caught.
The Klans target African Americans or blacks and those who tried to help them and set them free from slavery. The KKK would do things like mob African Americans and say racist things. They would also kidnap blacks from their homes or while they walk in the streets, take them to a secret place, and hang them. Klan members would often go to rallies just to find and kill African Americans and rob them. The Ku Klux Klan would murder African Americans for fear of blacks gaining more power than them. They would kill because they wouldn’t want to lose their slaves.
The African Americans that were attacked would fight back using non-violent ways, one of them being protests. African Americans would walk around with signs against The KKK and would promote their rights as citizens. They would also hold anti-klan rallies which also promotes things like anti-racism. They would try to get their freedom from KKK without using violence. In any of these situations, the police would take different sides. Some police would be against The KKK and try to arrest them, while others would agree with them. For example, at the Greensboro Massacre of November 3, 1979, five African American protest marchers were killed by members of The Ku Klux Klan. The police, however, were not present at the rally, but followed the Klansmen and did nothing to arrest them. In the month of January of 1998, there was a rally in Memphis that would soon have turned into a riot. The police, in that situation, stopped any further aggression from the crowd by firing tear gas. The police also arrested around 26 KKK members and also collected their weapons.
